As I was leaving a small coffee shop in North Knoxville yesterday morning on my early rounds, the waitress (whose husband had died last year) came up to me and handed me a plastic sandwich bag full of change. She had heard about our walkathon this coming weekend in Western Heights. Her daughter had died tragically of a drug overdose on the streets of Atlanta years ago. This good soul told me that while she couldn’t get off work to come join our walk, she wanted to give what she had collected in tips to help any program that might prevent someone else’s child from dying on the lonely city streets. I was much moved by this ‘widow’s mite’ as she gave from her heart all that she had. When I counted the change it came out to $15.23. The greatest donation we have ever received!
